Impressive Derron takes silver in T100 Ibiza
BMC triathlete Julie Derron, second in Paris, also reached the podium after the T100 in Ibiza. A strong performance from the Swiss athlete, as the T100 distance is significantly longer than the Olympic discipline.
Only the American Taylor Knibb was better than Derron in the 2-kilometre swim, 80-kilometre bike, and 20-kilometre run.
The most remarkable part of Derron’s performance was that she overcame a one-minute time penalty. Like Alistair Brownlee in the men’s race, Derron also received a one-minute penalty for drafting, something that is allowed in the Olympic discipline but not in the T100.
Despite the one-minute setback, Derron delivered an excellent bike performance and positioned herself well for the run. However, with the race leader four minutes ahead, she was no longer in contention for gold.
After the finish, Derron said, "I’m happy with my performance" and added, "I learned many lessons to take into future races. I’m grateful for the opportunity to test myself against the best athletes in Ibiza."
